Rene Ottier
Lead Instructor
Rene is a Paramedic whom graduated from Trillium College with a degree as a Primary Care Paramedic. Rene started his teaching over 15 years ago as a martial arts instructor for Sealy Karate Schools in Guelph. He taught children and adults a variety of different aspects in the martial arts world and later opened his own club. As an instructor, he has learned many technics for teaching to different learning styles to engage his students.
Rene has completed the Red Cross Instructors course and has certification to teach the Red Cross courses. He has been an instructor for a few different companies and has been an event medic for 4 years. He has also been certified by other companies to teach their certified programs, but has chosen the Red Cross to partner with to ensure his students receive the best program available. With a passion for teaching, Rene strives to provide the best learning experience for everyone!

Debra Ottier
Instructor
Deb has been active in the horse community since 1985, having helped her uncle race thoroughbreds on the racetracks of California. She graduated from the University of Guelph with a degree in Animal Science, with a minor in Animal Nutrition in 1991. She worked for 8 years at the former Equine Research Centre assisting in research areas such as exercise physiology, nutrition, reproduction, nuclear medicine and horse management. She worked closely with the veterinarians on staff as a technician and gained valuable skills in first aid for horses as well as technics required for research such as tubing, giving needles IV, IM, subcutaneously and inserting catheters. While working at the ERC, she continued research and attained a Masters of Science. She also created a distance learning program which had 5 courses in Reproduction, Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, Equine Management and Facilities and Design for horse enthusiasts to learn horse management from home. After graduating with her masters, she started Iron Horse Equine, a mobile reproduction unit which collected and processed stallion semen and held many workshops and seminars in a variety of areas pertaining to the horse industry. Deb has taken courses in principles of pedagogy with a focus on adult learning. She brings to the BTO team skills in Emergency Care for Horses and Riders.

Kia Ottier
Kia is a part time firefighter for the Milton Fire Department. She is trained in a variety of aspects of First Aid and Emergency Response. She is also a horse enthusiast and is trained in emergency response with horses as well. She enjoys teaching, loves to challenge her students and brings her training in fire safety to the classroom.
